The Tavern

Our customers frequently ask us about the history of this venerable
building so we have some fax, legends and lore about the place and
to the best of our knowledge, it's all generally true!
(how's that for being non-committal?)

Mid 1800's.... The Beginning

Charles Palmer, and local horse trader, sets about building a
charming home in handsome bar to House his prosperous business.
He chooses the corner of Erskine Road & Long Ridge Road in the village
of Long Ridge, which at the time was bustling with its own sawmill,
grist will and manufacturing operations.  We have some fine
photographs of the plumbers in front of their house and barn hanging
on the walls of the entrance foyer.

Sometime after Prohibition...

This part is a bit sketchy but sometime between the two big wars,
another barn was moved here from Erskine Road (now the
Tavern room) and the current configuration of buildings was born.
For many years, the complex House its first restaurant called
"The Country Kitchen" in the space that is now the Palmer Room.
The rest of the complex was home to an Antique Store, Real
Estate Office, Carey Hunt's Dress Shop and an Art Gallery.

The mid-70s...

With this next transformation we find end result to be what is
the Restaurant today.  The shops eventually gave way to
the restaurant's popularity as that country kitchen expanded
and became "The Country Tavern".  The restaurant was a
favored destination for generations of Fairfield and
Westchester County families until fell on hard times in the early '90s.

The Late 1990's...

The restaurant changed names and format a couple of times
during the '90s struggling along with a run down infrastructure
until been rescued and restored by the current owners on
February 1, 1997 The Long Ridge Tavern was reborn and once
again that thrives and prospers.  Old Charlie Palmer must
approve of our efforts because women report, on occasion,
that he whispers their name and wandering around the Palmer room.
